Expert Witness Services
Assessment of Deaf people in a legal setting is a highly specialised task, not to be undertaken by non-specialists. It is necessary to have an understanding of language and culture of Deaf people and of the impact of developmental experiences associated with Deafness.
Without such specialist input there is a significant risk that the Deaf person suffers from inappropriate assessment and inadequate service provision.
Dr Jim Cromwell MA(Hons) PsychD CPsychol is a Chartered Psychologist and Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society who is based in Exeter, but can travel across the UK to provide assessment based upon years of high quality experience of working psychologically with Deaf people directly in British Sign Language. He has been a Trustee and Chair of the British Society for Mental Health and Deafness, is a Level 4(6) signer and qualified BSL/English Sign Language Interpreter, and has worked with Deaf people since 1988. He works with Deaf adults, children and families, including learning disabled people and those with complex needs, and offers medico-legal reports, consultancy, training, and assessment.
